Welcome to SWING JAM! social dancing in Red Conception Gallery in Punavuori. =========================================== We will start at 19:00 with a taster class of Collegiate Shag. The talented Collegiate Shag rising stars Sara Mallinen and Alessandro Ituarte will introduce this cool Swing dance and make your feet grooving and your heart smiling!. All levels are welcome! Social dancing will start at 20:00 and will continue till midnight. DJ Norppa, DJ Swingerter and DJ Adrian Ehrlich will play their Swing music selections to satisfy the taste of Lindy hoppers, bal dancers and shaggers alike. Red Conception Gallery offers there dancefloor and a sushi buffet! Entrance: free. Sushi buffet: 15 Eur. ================================================ ABOUT COLLEGIATE SHAG together with the Lindy Hop and Balboa belongs to the swing family of American vernacular dances that arose in the 1920s and 30s. From the other swing dances, Collegiate Shag notably differs in the high hands, close position, hops, kicks and footwork. It is usually danced to faster and very fast-paced music. Shag was the hottest dance among the college kids in the 30s, that’s why some styles were called “Collegiate Shag”. The origins of the dance are not clear enough, almost no surviving archival material. It seems that Collegiate Shag was one of those suddenly appeared and as quickly disappeared things. In the mid 30s American dancer Arthur Murray tried to trace the footprints and standardize the dance.
