Switch Workshop! Nocturne Blues NYC Dance Exchange - Friday July 17th

Switch! Workshop right before the dance on Friday night. Lead? Follow? Why not do both! Taught by NYC's very own Mary Christensen, director of Gotham City Blues, the workshop will get you geared up and ready for the Switch! Competition on Sunday night. CLASS TITLE: Ambidancing: The Blues (R)Evolution CLASS DESCRIPTION: Everybody's doing it! In more and more scenes, more and more dancers are learning and dancing blues as gender-neutral, where anyone can lead, anyone can follow, and everyone can dance with any partner in the room. In classrooms, at social dances and house parties, and even--at NYC's Nocturne Blues--as a competition, you can explore your dancing as both a lead and a follow. This class is for ALL dancers of ALL levels. We will lay the foundations of frame and connection, musicality and isolations for both leading and following. We will then go in two opposite directions. One, exploring when and how we can blur the distinction between roles, asking, "what if both people are leading? what if no one is?" And two, what are those moves most strongly reserved for one role, what are the dips, the flourishes, the moves that will make you feel like a real lead and a real follow? Do it because... -it makes you a better dancer -you can dance with everyone -you can dance every song -you can help other people learn -it's feminist -it's LGBTQ-friendly -it's FUN! And by the end of class, when Nocturne dancers from NYC and all over the country ask, "would you like to lead or follow?" you can answer, "Can we switch?"
