The Urban Dance Project, Heart Tribe & The Tannery World Dance & Cultural Center are Honored to bring you a one day festival of the Arts, Music, Poetry, Speakers, World Fusion & Dance Culture. “THE CYPHER" Come join us on this cultural journey through the evolution of dance. Together we will explore the past, present and future of our creative cultural evolution through the medium of dance, theater, music, poetry, spoken word and visual art. Crowd participation is highly encouraged and facilitated. What is a cypher??? The word cypher literally means “a circle” where freestyle performances are shared. Whether it be dance or spoken word. It's a continuation of tribal community gathering and growing within a circle. Santa Cruz Cypher sessions, led by Mike Molde and members of the Legendary Collective, led by Guy Swan will showcase some of the most inspiring and mind opening freestyle rhymes and slam poetry. Places where we assume people share the same interest or perspectives as us may often be shockingly not so. Through the myriad influences of our own intentions, environments and social pressures we form a unique identity. Dr. Daniel Blumberg will be leading a discussion and expose on the unique culture of medicine. In this controversial discussion we will explore the subculture of professional medical practitioners and how this affects both practitioner and clients in a troubling way. Participants are encouraged to share their views and experiences. ~Middle Eastern Raks Sharki~ 9:30pm to 10pm Chandala SnowShiva, Lale Yasemin Kaya, and Rose Thorn will hypnotize us all into a minor key vibe while blessing the dance floor with their diverse middle eastern styles. If you are moved by their dance forms don't be shy, give a friendly snap of the fingers or a “ropa” or even a snake hiss in appreciation! ~Chandala Snow-Shiva~ was a co-founder of Raks Bastet Bellydance , is the Director of Satinka Bellydance* and founder of Dance From Within – an annual yoga and belly dance retreat in the Santa Cruz Mountains. She danced out of her mother’s womb and has continued to dance along her life’s colorful path. Dance is therapy, a medicine for Lale, as it nourishes her soul. Her name, translates to Tulip Jasmine Stone. ~Rose Thorn~ combines belly dance with ecstatic dance, Butoh, contact, improvisation, and devotional dance to provide a unique PRESENCE with the help of her snake friend Ananda. ~Jemini Incantations~ 10-10:30pm Jem InEYE will part the veil between where we may of come from and where we are now. The combinations of a few basic repeating patterns are truly infinite and I have always found solace and peace with these never-ending creations. I am a self-taught artist and love working with henna paste and other types of mediums (canvas, acrylic, pen & ink, body art paints and tattoo design) to create self-expressive art all based on perfect flow and movement within the design itself. Merging this, with ancient traditional henna patterning, to achieve something the eye looses itself within is my ultimate goal. He has been exploring several art forms and creative outlets since 2010, the most recent being pottery.
