The Lab round THREE – CINCO DE MAYO CELEBRATION is just around the corner!! It’s time to STEP IT UP A NOTCH! We will be adding NEW FEATURES including New Music and Exploration Challenges!!! The last two have been amazing and I see opportunity to support and encourage more exploration…so that is just what we will do!! THE LAB – Cinco de Mayo You Can Expect: TWO WORKSHOPS: *** LAB FOUNDATIONS WORKSHOP 8:15-9PM*** Basic lead and follow techniques will be taught with time to explore. We will also play with ideas on how to lead 'without genre' and therefore create clear lead ;withIN genre'. I will introduce Lab Challenges and how to use them throughout the night. ***FEATURED MUSICALITY WORKSHOP by Marc Brewer!!! What a better way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo that explore ways to be musical in our dances?! WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Time to level up! Your fundamentals are strong and your technique is solid, but what’s the secret to dancing like the pro’s? In this workshop we will introduce often neglected concepts of dynamics, texture, and organic styling into your dance. Using music as driver and mood (music motivates the dance but is also an energy field within which dancing lives), we will delve deep into your personal kin-aesthetic and if time permits, introduce the concept of shared expression, where we delicately balance freedom of personal expression with the importance of connection. The technique in this class will have its foundations in anatomy, imagery, physics, and dance theory. • ****NEW TO LAB*** EXPLORATION EXPERIMENT CHALLENGES!! At the beginning of the night each person will have the option to choose from a number of experiment challenge cards which they can present to a partner at any time in the night. If your partner provides consent for the challenge and being a part of the exploration process, with the best intention of your partner to include safety and respect of personal boundaries, you can be free to explore varying elements of dance and help you think outside the box and realize more of your dance potential! Examples of challenges you might see are: - Dance and entire song without a basic. (Objective: To show how to explore movement, purest form of lead and follow) - Dance an entire song using one finger (Objective: To realize how power is not needed to lead, rather, clarity) My hope is that I will not here anyone say…’I can’t dance to this song, I don’t know ___’ • ADDED Musical genres to facilitate exploring musicality presented by the fabulous James Powell DJ POWER! • Cinco de Mayo Surprises TBA! One dance floor will meet; Zouk, Sensual Bachata, Urban Kizomba and lots of lyrical music all set to inspire play, exploration, practice leading, following in genres in which you’re familiar and in which will have to improvise. ALL OF THE MUSIC presented by the FABULOUS DJ POWER!! The intention of the Lab is to learn and explore movement and skills which can be applied to **multiple styles of dance** or create fusion or simply create clear and connected freestyle. Take what you learn in the Lab onto the dance floor of your favorite dance styles and create a unique flare to your personal style. Become their go-to dance! Leads are encouraged to explore following and followers are encouraged to explore leading....we will switch! !!!WORKSHOPS!!! Each Lab will feature different instructors who will teach techniques not based on footwork but other skills you can apply to multiple genres and teach you skills to up your social dancing game!!! PRICES!! Will vary slightly based on event. I intend to have more social-style events and larger events to bring you a particularly heightened experience. LOCATION: Will vary...please stay tuned for each event. ******************Origin of the name THE LAB***************** While assisting in private dance lessons, many times students were afraid of getting a move wrong. Even when they were encouraged to TRY and EXPLORE to 'see what happens' with permission to figure our how to get out of a move they were not familiar with, to learn how to lead through something **unplanned**, or **create something cool from something unlearned** there was a fear of failure and a fear of not knowing. I understood, I have felt the same. But I also saw the value of having such a special opportunity. At one moment I suggested a student think of the space we were in for the lesson as a Lab! It's a SAFE place, with GOOD intentions a place to LEARN, GROW and EXPLORE. It is a place where things can work out in ways unplanned and it can be amazing! But, YOU.. I...WE ...HAVE TO, TRY!
