"The Savoy Ballroom" (an illustrated talk)

Celebrating the centenary of the Savoy Ballroom, which opened on 12 March 1926 6.45pm - 8.15pm (1.5hrs) Presentation 8.15pm - 8.45pm (30 mins) social dancing Through photographs, floor plan and eyewitness accounts, I'll be bringing the early years of the Ballroom to life. What did it stand for? Who attended? What did they dance? This presentation is based on published research. Historians have dug deep into the records to help us understand the impact, significance and lasting legacy of the Home of Happy Feet, the Most Beautiful Ballroom in the World, the iconic Savoy Ballroom. In particular of course, we'll be shining a spotlight on its interesting role in the development and spread of the Lindy Hop. She brings her experience of research in literature (PhD) to her work in early jazz dance in order to better understand the dance and its contexts. Her talks at Morley College are an opportunity to present and discuss topics that come up in class in more depth than is available in weekly dance classes.
