About this Event
The Space Between is a workshop for artists who want to investigate and awaken an embodied awareness of relationship to themselves, to other and to the spaces we inhabit...
WELCOME to the DISCOVERY SESSION!
Saturday, November 17th from 1:00-3:30pm
At the MAI (Montreal, Arts Interculturels)
In this discovery session, you’ll have the opportunity to be introduced to our approach to the work (if you are new to it) or to take your practice deeper (if you have already attended the weekend workshop). By the end of the evening, you’ll have a better understanding of what ignites you and challenges you as an artist and as a human being. You’ll leave with a basic framework and a language for approaching your artistic practice that is grounded in your personal values, desires, and curiosities.
This work is designed to be accessible to actors as well as artists of various disciplines, along with directors, educators and therapists. Nevertheless, some experience in performance, movement or other embodied artistic practice is recommended.
Please bring a journal and writing implement, a water bottle and comfortable clothes to move in.

MORE ABOUT THE WORK:
This approach to performance training and creation is designed to investigate and awaken relationships already at play between us and ourselves, others, and the spaces we inhabit, near and infinite.
Through a deepened awareness of self, our emotions, body and mind, we may explore our perceived boundaries from a place of empowered choice and heighten our understanding of “alone” and “together”. Using somatic and improvisational practices along with compassionate communication we seek out depth and specificity in our relationships, cultivating an openness to intimacy and comfort with space itself.
Our aim is to facilitate consciously-crafted creative learning environments and innovative frameworks for performance-based artistic research and development. We offer tools and embodied practices that support artists in intentionally crafting an authentic approach to their personal creative practice.

FACILITATOR BIOS:
Gabriela Petrov is a theatre artist, educator and recent MFA graduate based in Montreal, working in multiple forms including acting, puppetry, devising and improvisational composition. Gabi's artistic practice explores intentionally working from the unknown, blurring the boundaries between process and product. The foundational practices that Gabi draws from are the Six Viewpoints, somatic approaches to body-mind integration and Contemplative creation processes. In recent work, Gabi has explored the nature of performance through asking what is necessary or "enough" for a performative event to occur and how little can be done by a body in space while still allowing an audience in.
Daphne Lorian is an interdisciplinary theatre artist, educator and relationship coach whose mission is to catalyze liberated self-expression, compassionate connection, and actualization of our human potential. She specializes in communication, authentic relating and embodiment, guided journeywork and play, and offers these as pathways to enhance sensory, somatic and emotional awareness. As an artist, she draws on the traditions of self-revelatory performance, shadow theatre, contact improvisation, mask, myth, and ritual to facilitate the creation of transformational contemporary work. Daphne holds a BFA Specialization in Theatre and Development, with a focus on the transformational, therapeutic and educational aspects of performance. Previously she completed training in Professional Acting at John Abbot College, as well as at East 15 Acting School and the City Literary Institute in London, UK.
