Tiempo Contratiempo: Musicality series for Salsa, Casino & Son dancers

Have you ever wondered why Son, Casino, Salsa, and Cha Cha Chá can feel so different, even though they share many musical roots? In this 3-week series, we'll explore the concepts of tiempo and contratiempo and how different timing choices change the feeling of the dance. This is not a pattern-focused course. Rather than learning long combinations, we'll focus on listening to the instruments, understanding timing, and developing more options for expressing what we hear in the music. Topics will include: • Tiempo vs contratiempo • Listening to the instruments and finding timing in the music • Son and Casino/Salsa timing, and switching between the two • Cha Cha Chá timing and incorporating it into Son and Salsa • Mambo timing and basic steps • Different footwork options • Connecting movement to music through timing This series is ideal for dancers with some Salsa, Casino, or Son experience who would like to deepen their musical understanding and expand their movement vocabulary.
