UConn Swing & Blues: Black History Month Talkback

As Black History Month draws to a close, so do UConn Swing & Blues’ posts on the chronological history of Swing and Blues dance (for the time being!). We, as members of the swing dancing community, have put an incredible amount of thought into these posts, and plan to continue dedicating our time on informing the community on the importance of learning the culture behind these dances. However, this does not mean that our work is coming to an end. To wrap up our series of posts, we invite members of the swing and blues dance communities to join us for an open forum on the topics of Lindy Hop, Blues, and other African American vernacular dances. We hope that by doing this, we set a precedent with this club to openly engage in these conversations with other dancers so we are better able to understand and appreciate the cultural significance of this art form. It is also very important to acknowledge that this dance form is continuously evolving, and with time will come new information and cultural significance, and it is the duty for all dedicated dancers to take the time to ensure we are appropriately respecting the art form we all enjoy. This forum will be held on Sunday, March 7th at 6:00pm EST over Zoom. We encourage people to join and participate, ask questions, and share your own information about this dance community! This forum is open to all of the swing dance community, NOT just UConn students. We do ask that if you’re interested in attending, to please fill out the registration form at least half an hour before the forum begins, so we know where to send the Zoom link.
