The Uma Nota Festival of Tropical Expressions 2012 The festival returns with a full lineup of cultural programming for the open-minded, unpretentious and tropically adventurous. The two-day, two-night affair includes live and DJ musical performances, workshops, talks and panel discussions, food and drink and co-presentations of two Brazilian films, in partnership with Brazil Film Fest. The festival’s musical lineup brings together the city’s best upcoming groove acts, Brazilian, and Latin community players making noise, and a well-loved Rio samba singer and composer with the Canadian debut of his first solo record. Uma Nota Festival of Tropical Expressions: Schedule and programming at a glance Saturday, October 20, Doors 9 p.m. at The Great Hall (1078 Queen St. W.) The Uma Nota Flagship Event – Three bands in a World Funk showcase: - Sound One, playing classic 1950s-style ska tunes - Mar Aberto SoundSystem, blending influences from reggae, funk, Brazilian percussion and live dub - Asiko Afrobeat Ensemble, a 10-piece group headed by heavy-hitter vocalist and talking drum player Foly Kolade, a recent Toronto acquisition, originally from Nigeria. He has remounted Asiko, previously based in Brooklyn, with local Toronto players. The group performs all original songs. - Dos Mundos DJs and DJ General Eclectic will also perform, along with live, interactive “5-d graffiti” visual projections throughout the night by Ba of Core Matrix. Featured live acts: - Ruben Esguerra's A New Tradition (traditional Afro-Cuban and Colombian instruments and spoken word) - Brazilian musician Jô Lutério (a relaxed “roda de samba”) - Maria Bonita and the Band (Brazilian forró, a style of partner dancing music) - DJ Mogpaws (Afro-Latin, Caribbean and Brazilian tunes) - Workshops: Brazilian folkoric dances, including Forró with Brazil DanceWorld and Coco de Roda with Maracatu Mar Aberto and guests, and caipirinha making with cachaça provided by Pitú. - Cultural talks: "What Is Good Brazilian Popular Music?: MPB, Axé Music and the Search for Authenticity," by musician Gord Sheard of the Humber School of Music; and "World music: what does it mean today?" – a panel discussion with with Dalton Higgins (journalist and music programmer), David Dacks (The Music Gallery, Exclaim! magazine), David Arcus (composer/producer/musician), Marcus Boon (cultural theory instructor at York University and music programmer with TheWaves) and Uma Nota producer Alex Bordokas. Moderator: Sergio Elmir of CIUT’s Dos Mundos Radio. - Marketplace and food: ChocoSol and other community vendors and organizations; food will be on offer for the afternoon at Supermarket. Sunday, October 21, 7 p.m. at Revival (636 College St.) Closing party for Brazil Film Fest and Uma Nota Festival of Tropical Expressions - Concert: Pedro Luís and his band, live from Rio de Janeiro. Beloved in Brazil as a bandleader, singer and composer with popular Rio-based samba groups Monobloco and Pedro Luís e a Parede, Luís will perform songs from his first solo album, Tempo do Menino, in the Canadian debut of this work, alongside some of his career-making hits. For this performance, Pedro Luís will be joined by Marcelo Vig (drums and programming), Guila (bass) and Leo Saad (guitar and keyboard), with special guest appearances by Toronto-based, Rio-born musicians Luanda Jones and Maninho Costa.
