This special Contact Improv -based container requires people to arrive by certain times in order to participate and asks everyone to stay through the duration of the journey until the closing circle. ~May 29th Schedule~ 5:45pm Door opens for registration -- please aim to arrive as early as possible, to allow time for check in 6-6:30pm Talk-through -- **must attend if you have never been to an Underscore, recommended for everyone else** 6:30-8:45pm Underscore -- **must arrive by 6:30pm in order to participate** 8:45-9pm Closing circle ~Pricing~ The entrance fee is $20 -- We have an Accessibility discount of 50% for marginalized peoples, such as BIPOC and LGTBQIA+ folx and those who are experiencing financial hardship..... or pay what you can; NOTA (No One Turned Away for lack of funds). Participating in the Underscore is an opportunity to practice Contact Improvisation within a structure that cultivates group mind along with a shared experience of creativity, play and permission. Developed by Nancy Stark Smith in the early 90's, the Underscore supports participants in a collective improvisational movement exploration that generates moment to moment group composition. "The Underscore is a vehicle for incorporating Contact Improvisation into a broader arena of improvisational dance practice; for developing greater ease dancing in spherical space—alone and with others; and for integrating kinesthetic and compositional concerns while improvising. It allows for a full spectrum of energetic and physical expressions, embodying a range of forms and changing states. Its practice is familiar yet unpredictable." ~ Nancy Stark Smith The Underscore is an oral tradition passed along from person to person, group to group with a Talk-Thru. Once a group has learned the structure, they practice it together non-verbally with minimal facilitation. This is an indoor venue. Masks are optional. Anyone under age 18 is asked to attend with a guardian, and/or email us first to discuss.
