Seen and Heard International Concert Review
San Francisco Symphony, Alexander Barantschik, violin and conductor, Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, 14.02.2007 (HS)
"...Even with an extended cadenza, written for the violinist to link the two works, the most riveting music making came from Seth Asarnow. He used every aspect of the accordion-like bandoneon, its distinctive sound, its flexibility in rapid passages, and its range of attack from percussive to smooth legato, to get more soul and musical meat into his lines than anything else in the entire concert..."

What is A La Parilla?
The "A la parrilla" style of playing Tango is basically making up an arrangement on the spot. Often times musicians will base what they play on well known arrangements but sometimes it is mostly improvised.
During and after the '60's, big Tango orchestras had a harder time staying afloat due to the decline of the popularity of Tango so smaller groups (Trios, Quartets) started sprouting. These musicians would get together and try to cover all the parts from known arrangements. Everyone would throw in what they knew in the same manner that one would bring food to be cooked on a grill (parrilla) at a barbecue pot-luck.
Needless is to say that the higher the level of each musician, the less improvised the performance will sound. Great Tango improvisers can be compared to great Tango dancers, combining moves they are both familiar with in new and fresh ways. -Pablo Motta
