About this Event

Hi Dancers, ✨ We are back at the beautiful Hartnett Park this Sunday morning! Art.Zoyd has prepared a special set for our return outdoors called β€œThrough Fields of Green,” a set about dancing in the fields. He shares a haiku he wrote about the set: When it’s time to leave We will dance eternally Throughout fields of green Again, our organizer Wolf Qi is leaving after May 31st, so we are going to send them off with a lot of legendary dances this month β€” Andrew (Art.Zoyd) will be out of the country for a few months as well after the 31st, so we are in need of other organizers! If you are interested, please let us know! Also, let us know if you are interested in bringing a set! We will still be dancing at the Black Cat once a month (every 4th week of the evening dance, we will be back at the Black Cat), but we will be dancing this summer at various parks. So stay tuned on the email list for where the dance will be each week! Hartnett Park is one of our favorite spaces, with level soft grasses, a playground, a shaded area to dance in behind the barn (which is a concrete floor), and bathroom access. We will still have free water available for dancers. Come join us this Sunday at 11:00 AM for our communal ecstatic dance β™₯️ and co-create authentic moments on the dance floor! πŸ’ƒπŸ» If any of you are interested in set weaving or co-organizing, please let us know! Our goal is to have many different people on rotation, bringing their unique soundscapes and souls to our space. (SCHEDULE BELOW SUBJECT TO CHANGE NOW THAT WE ARE ENTERING A NEW ERA OF OUTDOOR DANCES β€” Keep your eyes out for changes) A quick schedule update to help make our gatherings more accessible, sustainable, and family-friendly: 1st & 3rd Sundays: Morning dances at 11:00 AM 2nd & 4th Sundays: Evening dances at 6:30 PM 5th Sundays: Rest day or special events Mark your calendars, and thank you for co-creating this space with us. Attendees are encouraged to come sober to ensure a mindful and wholesome container! ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` About Ecstatic Dance Ecstatic dance is a form of abandonment, meaning there are no steps to follow. The rhythm of the music will become one’s only guidance and is intended to open the individual to the purest form of ecstasy: life. There is no wrong way to dance. All forms of activity that are grounded in the spirit of consent are encouraged, and often range from sitting peacefully on the outskirts of the dance floor to thrashing one’s limbs around like a wild monkey. Our goal is to create an intentional space where people of all races, ages, genders, sizes, and socio-economic backgrounds are openly welcome to unite in the experience of an authentic moment β€” a physical and mental rehabilitation that strips away the distractions between the individual self, music, and others. The dance is guided through a wave of music woven upon the theory of Five Rhythms: beginning with flowing ambient music, moving upward energetically into rhythmic staccato, eventually hitting a chaotic peak, then coming down into (lyrical) playfulness, and settling into a reflective stillness. The music set will last about 90 minutes, with an opening and closing circle at the beginning and end of the dance. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Additional Notes It is encouraged to arrive on time so that you can experience the whole sonic journey and participate in the opening circle. Feel free to arrive late if you can't arrive on time, but arriving on time is especially important if you don't have prior experience with ecstatic dance. The opening circle will not only include a short consent workshop, but also a description of the practice and the theme of the set being played. If you wish to dance with others, remember to seek non-verbal cues of consent (eye contact and open arms mean 'YES'; Arms crossed, no eye contact, avoidance mean 'NO'). Accept the 'NO' (it's okay if someone doesn't want to dance with you at a particular point in time; this is a great way to learn about boundaries!) An optional closing circle will be at the end of the dance for people to share experiences and conclude the dance. You are not required to share your experience, but encouraged to share your name and pronouns. ````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` Logistics Date: Sunday, May 3rd Time: 11:00 am - 1:00 pm Location: Hartnett Park Hartnett Park, 6718 Rio Grande Blvd NW, Albuquerque, NM 87107-6330 We are dancing in the grassy field near the barn (look for golf courts, we will be in the field right of the courts) Suggested Donation: $10-20 (cash, Venmo: @jesse-kalapa, or Cash App: @chocolatejesse) No one will be turned away for lack of funds, but this money will go toward being able to rent spaces to dance in, upkeep equipment to bring to spaces without a sound system or lights (i.e., outdoor spaces), being able to have rituals such as cacao and sound healing before dance, and paying DJs. We hope to be able to rent out a space to dance indoors as well as have outdoor dances. With love and movement, The Albuquerque Ecstatic Dance Collective
