Many people worldwide want to dance tango, but tango communities are growing too slowly. We all see this. This often applies to other dances as well. Many talented people run or start schools, but things often don’t go as expected. Despite much effort, it sometimes seems like the most difficult business goal in the world is to see the results of your work in a well-developed school and community. We know it’s not easy. We’ve been on that path for 16 years. We’ve created one of the largest – perhaps the largest – tango organizations in Europe. We built a stable school and a connected community. We feel fulfilled and grateful when we hear how many colleagues worldwide have been and continue to be inspired by Tango Natural. Let’s be honest, it was very hard for us too. We invested and sacrificed a lot. For every good solution, we made mistakes several times. Then, we documented those solutions, conceptually organized them, and systematized them so that new colleagues in our organization, which continues to grow, could understand them. In parallel, with the desire to contribute to the spread of tango and to learn, we observed the tango world, spoke with hundreds of people, analyzed each success and failure, and incorporated everything into our understanding of how to build a tango school, organization, and community. We identified shared principles applicable across the dance world and beyond. We became mentors and trainers on leadership, as well as team and community development in broader business and corporate contexts, which gave us new dimensions of understanding. Over the years, we’ve mentored about twenty founders of tango schools worldwide, as well as several others in different dances. These were often spontaneous arrangements after someone expressed a desire to learn from us. Under our roof and with our mentorship, the dance studio In Motion was founded, which is now independent and (after only 2 years) one of the more successful Belgrade schools focused on sensual dances (bachata, kizomba...). Now, we want to share what we know with many more people. We want to ease your journey, accelerate the spread of tango and other dances, and create new inspiring collaborations. We aim to support and facilitate networking and exchange among instructors and organizers. Join us on January 21st at 7 PM and discover some of the secrets of successfully developing a tango (dance) school and community. We run projects in four countries (Serbia, Slovakia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina). We currently organize: • Belgrade Tango Encuentro (festival/marathon) • Bratislava Tango Festival (with Tango Vida school) • Summer Tango Camp (Kolašin, Montenegro) • Belgrade Summer Tango Marathon • Belgrade New Year’s Tango Marathon • Belgrade Tango Weekends • Youth Tango Exchange (with Aster school from Sarajevo) We’ve also organized events like Port of Tango (Tivat, Montenegro, with Tango i tačka) and Summer Tango Spa (Vrnjačka Banja, Serbia) and the Belgrade Tango Experience festival. We have developed a system of dance and of development of instructors that allows the school to keep growing while preserving the original warmth of the old Tango Natural founded by Sonja and Darko in 2008. Our Belgrade team currently includes almost 40 people, 15 of whom make a living solely from tango, while for the others, tango is an additional job to varying degrees. The teams in Montenegro (Tango Natural Montenegro) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Tango Natural Banja Luka) do not yet operate on fully professional models, and currently, none of their members live exclusively from tango. By nurturing different levels and models of professionalization that suit those who join us in spreading tango, we implement comprehensive dance education and organize a large number of regular and special local events such as prácticas, milongas, and other activities. We are especially proud of projects dedicated to introducing young people to tango. The Free Tango School for Primary School Students ran for three years and involved about 140 children. The Free Tango School for High School Students has existed for about 12 years – many of its graduates are now top dancers or tango instructors. For the past ten years, we have also run a separate project for youth up to 26 or 30 years old, offering numerous discounts and benefits for this generation. Within Tango Natural, the Tanguango orchestra is also developing. We know this portfolio might sound too formal and corporate, but it’s here for those who don’t know us yet – to show that they will be learning from people who have successfully built what they teach. For the juicier, more fun, human, and emotional side – see you at the webinar! 🤗 ______________________________ Darko Dožić: Originally a political scientist by profession.
