Introduction to Dance Therapeutics
This workshop is a taster platter of Deb’s Dance Therapeutics program, designed to unlock tension in the body, and create ease, mobility, and alignment.
Learn the foundational concepts and practices of Deb Rubin’s signature Dance Therapeutics Training and Certification Program. Rooted in an understanding of Fascia, and the integrative, fascia web of the body as the blueprint for all your movement, you will learn how to unlock tension patterns in the body, radically refine your tribal fusion belly dance technique and artistry, and learn efficient and effective therapeutics practices to unlock your body, get out of pain, improve your mobility, fluidity, and develop and core-connected, integrated approach to your dancing. Learn what is Fascia? And why is this helpful in understanding your body in motion, and getting out of pain? Drawing from Yoga, Feldenkrais, Traditional Thai-yoga Massage, Partner Yoga, Pilates, and Deb's 15 years experience in the fields of Bodywork, Yoga, Holistic Health & Mind-Body Medicine, in this special workshop we will focus on the home practices and solutions for dancer’s self-care, wellness, and longevity, and apply all of this directly to your belly dance.
2:30-3:30 lunch break
3:30-5:30
Fancy Footwork & Flow
This workshop will focus on traveling steps in tribal fusion, moving across the floor, turns, footwork, layering hip, torso, and arm work over footwork, and developing smooth, sassy transitions between movements to create cohesive combos. Workshop begins with Deb’s Signature core-integrated yoga for belly dancers warm up, including a focus on pelvic-leg relationship necessary for traveling steps, and activating the core muscles necessary for ease-full layering and graceful movement across stage, and ends with fun, up-tempo traveling combos.
Sunday June 2
8:30-9:00 check-in
9:00-11:00
The Tension Of Opposites
In this workshop, we will explore the delicate interplay between 2 opposing forces—balancing slow, sinewy, serpentine, fluid transitions and movements, with quick, sharp, crisp, isolated hits and accents to give any combination ‘punch’ and create more dynamic dancing and performance. We will also explore the elements of contrast and creating tension within single movement phrases. Workshop includes: Deb’s signature core yoga for dancers warm up and technique drills (may include: torso isolations, hip work, traveling footwork, and/or layering). All material will then be incorporated into a new Deb combo, inspired by the heart of SF tribal, which we will then manipulate and add to, using the concepts explored in class, to encourage dancers to think outside the box and explore their own creative process. Please bring yoga mat and be ready to sweat!

So You Think You Can Dance
As the genre of tribal fusion continues to evolves to being featured on big theater stages and rightfully deemed as powerful performance art, we must evolve as dancers, widening our training and our dance repertoire to include the necessary core-integrated, embodied elegance and underlying form on which all belly dance layers can be laid. This workshop focuses on how we travel through space--moving across the floor, extension of lines, grace, and fluid transitions and turns while keeping our center and floating upper body for stage. Then, we will move across the floor, layering torso isolations and belly dance hip work over our fancy footwork, long lines, and traveling steps. We will also play with creating interesting body angles, levels, and shapes to frame your torso isolations in flattering ways for your own physique, in order to inspire your own brand of fusion. (*Across the floor material inspired from Deb's studies in Tango, Modern, and Ballet, directly applied to tribal fusion belly dance.)
