About this Event

Every once in a while at Colorado Blues Dance we decide that it's high time for some intensive work as a community. We come together to learn with the world's most creative and dedicated instructors. On September 30th, we will begin a music and movement exploration with Flouer Evelyn and Joshua Fialkoff. They are both profound professionals in the field of music and dance as you'll find in their bios found on their websites. Just follow the links posted below. https://flouerdances.com/ and http://www.joshfialkoff.com/ Flouer and Josh are on a magical movement tour of the country right now and will be stopping here in the Front Range for a weekend full of the best instruction you could hope for. This workshop is an amazing opportunity to get everything you would from a national exchange in your own backyard at a practically private level of instruction. If you want to register for the event you can go here: http://tinyurl.com/jandfworkshop Andante Blues will be hosting our kickoff event where Flouer and Joshua will be DJ'ing through the night. Starting the next day at noon we will begin a four hour intensive workshop at the First Avenue Presbyterian Church. Sunday will be a little different as we will begin at 1:00 p.m. after their church services have completed. That night we will enjoy a night of dancing at the Dancing Root. Registrants will enjoy all of the activities mentioned included in the price of the workshop. $80 if you sign up by the end of this week, $100 if you wait until next week. $125 if you register the day of. **WEEKEND SCHEDULE** September 30th: 9:00 p.m. Beginner Class at Andante Blues (*this is recommended for EVERYONE and ESPECIALLY if you're advanced.*) 9:30-11:59 p.m. DANCE!!! October 1st: 11:45 a.m. begin arriving so that we can begin our workshop at NOON! 12:00-1:00: "Expanding your Horizons" Participating in a social dance is a beautiful, magical, and really complicated experience. Not only do we have to be aware of our own dancing, our partner’s dancing, the dancers around us, and the social environment; we also have to listen to the music, which is itself composed of several distinct instruments! In this class we’ll seek to expand our layers of awareness so that our social dance experiences can easily incorporate the ideas expressed by all the other artists in the room. 1:15-2:15: "Stop, Collaborate & Listen" When Vanilla Ice dropped “Ice Ice Baby” on us, he probably didn’t realize that he was dropping musicality truth bombs. In this class, we honor his irony by focusing on two crucial skills: collaborating, and listening. When Flouer and Josh started collaborating on this class about collaborating (how meta of us), we found that we used many of the same tools to communicate with musicians as we did with dancers. In this class we will share some of these tools with you and collaborate with each other on our collaboration skills. 2:30-4:45: (with 15 min break) "Tain’t What You Do, it’s the Way That You Do It" As dancers, we sometimes make the mistake of thinking that crazy moves are a necessary component to being musical. We forget that we can take any piece of vocabulary and alter it to fit the musical landscape. In this class we will delve deeper into songs we commonly dance to, and point out some things you may be missing. Along the way, we will learn some new vocabulary and work on the physical skills of lead/follow technique, control, and balance. When we’re through with you, we’ll still be able to tell what you’re dancing to even when we put our earmuffs on! Dinner. Evening Activity TBA October 2nd 12:00 p.m. OPTIONAL GROUP LUNCH @ The Hornet (not included in registration price) 1:00-2:00: "Woosh, Swoop, Tick & Tock" What?! Grrrr. Weeee! When we express ourselves through words and sounds, our voices go through a myriad of interesting textures, each one helping to convey an emotional message. The same is true when we express ourselves through movement. This class will aid us in the journey of finding specific texturing in dance through matching our movement with our sounds, be them silly or otherwise! 2:15-4:30: (with 15 min break) "Hi-Res Emotion" When we discuss the emotional color of a song, we’ll often use words like “happy” or “sad.” Sometimes we’ll delve slightly deeper into our lexicon to find words like “melancholy” or “exuberant.” Emotion is much more complex than these low-resolution terms can describe, as is the emotional content of the songs we listen to. Come fuel your musical expression by exploring a high-resolution approach to describing a song’s emotional content through movement. 4:45-5:45: "Road Trip!" You’ve got a full tank of gas, a pound-plus chocolate bar, and a 6-hour drive to the exchange. What can you do besides hit the pedal and stuff your face? How about work on your dancing! There’s plenty you can do without a dance floor, and we wanna help you make those 6 hours count. Come learn some fun games that will nurture your friendships as much as they will your musicality. Dinner 7:00 p.m. Class at The Dancing Root with an AMAZING instructor 8:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m. Fusion DJ'ing with Flouer and Joshua Registration is here: http://tinyurl.com/jandfworkshop *If you wish to attend this event and it is financially out of your reach, contact Kylie @ [email protected] or on Facebook: Kylie Kahnke.
