World is Sound ~ Global Bass night in Oakland! Jef Stott and World is Sound begin a new residency at Elbo Room in Oakland's Jack London district! A monthly night of global bass, dub and tropical beats from the far corners of the globe. We celebrate the amazing diversity of our Oakland home thru music and dance. As above so below! We will be spinning in the street level bar from 9:30-1:30 PM. This event is produced in part by World is Sound a video series about TRAVEL and MUSIC http://worldissound.tv/ Featured Artists JEF STOTT (Six Degrees/ Embarka Records) Composer, producer and performer JEF STOTT has been deftly navigating the realms of world fusion music for nearly two decades, where he has consistently been at the forefront of the International Global Bass movement. A prolific producer and composer he has been releasing music on notable labels such as Six Degrees Records, Mercury, Hearts of Space and many others. His latest project ASLAN DUB SYSTEM Vol. 1, his 12th full-length studio production is out now on his new EMBARKA RECORDS label. Jef has embarked on several successful world tours and international appearances including several tours of Japan, Turkey and North America. Jef Stott’s DJ sets bring a sense of tribal community to the dance floor with dynamic live instrumentation and top shelf musicality from guest performers interplaying with original tracks and live remixes. The arc of his performances can range from the most delicate acoustic and ambient moments to the chakra blasting intensity of peak hour sonic bliss. He is a regular performer at Ecstatic Dance events around the world and is intuitively sensitive to the collective emotion of a moving dance floor. Jef is a highly accomplished lifelong multi-instrumentalist, adding a live performance element to his live shows with many instruments ranging from Arabic string and percussion instruments to guitars, bass drums and live electronics. Jef has lead several live ensembles on stage throughout his career. http://jefstott.com/ DLMJ (Global Barrio) The concept of DLMJ is based on an objective of the diversification of electronic music through blending his passion for traditional and indigenous rhythms from all around the world with different electronic styles like tech-house, dub and chill out. Although part of a new wave of global artists who are reconnecting the folkloric rhythms of their cultures by mixing them with new technology and ways of producing music, DLMJ manages to bring his own signature style to the stage. The live manifestation of his project includes vocals and rock influenced guitars which create a rich, but stark contrast with the latin folk rhythms and melodies that are constantly guiding the electronic music elements. Because of the diversity of his catalogue, the show constantly changes its textures between merely an electronic DJ act and a latin pop/rock show. The context of the songs is just as important as the music. It’s an intentionally political project designed to bring consciousness about different issues into different spaces. His lyrics and samples reflect a visceral, emotional reaction to current events in his native Mexico and how they affect and are affected by other global issues. The music embodies this social and political discontent in an almost sarcastic way; heavy dark synths and baselines, hand-in-hand with the very rhythmic and joyful structures of cumbia, reggaeton, folklorico, mariachi, etc. David moved to the US 5 years ago, and the culture clash of this migration is an important aspect of this project. His compositions are driven by this culture clash, which results in a melting-pot phonaesthetic. Multiple genres and decades are layered and integrated into each other in just one song. The future of the project is to keep it growing musically and visually until it becomes a globally high impact and unique experience. Troupe Joweh Live Bellydance performance Joweh has been Teaching and Performing around the globe, these highly skilled performers are trained in various dance styles and tomfoolery and have been causing quite a stir in the belly dance community with their RAW (Random American World) dance.
