Join us to learn Lindy Hop with the dynamic and exciting professional Lindy Hop couple from Seoul South Korea - Soochan Lee and Hyunjung Choi. It took the world by storm along with the growth of jazz music. Though it waned in popularity in the 1950s-1970s, it was revived in the 80s and now there are lindy hop communities all around the world. To celebrate World Lindy Hop Day, the NUS CAC Lindy Hop Club together with dancers from the Singapore Lindy community, are presenting a series of workshops aimed at introducing this fun dance to absolute beginners. The programme also includes a Swing Party, with members of the local Lindy Hop community joining in to welcome new dancers. Within a weekend we promise you will be swinging out and grooving along, just in time for the global celebration of World Lindy Hop Day which falls on 26 May every year! THE SCHEDULE : Sat 21 May 2016 2pm to 530pm 6, 7, 8 - Swing Out! An introduction to Lindy Hop and the 8-count pattern (aka the Swing Out) that is so distinctive to the dance. Dancers learn the foundation of lindy hop steps as well as the basic of lead and follow which is essential to the dance. Jazz Roots Steps Jazz dance started in the 1920s when African culture cross pollinated with the culture of Europe in early 20th century America. Along with the new genre of music, a new style of dance known as “Jazz” developed and while it was first viewed as shocking and uncivilised, it soon became the most fashionable dance to do! Lindy Hop grew out of this time when music and dance developed hand in hand Won’t You Charleston With Me The Charleston was the dance that was popular in the 1920s, just before Lindy Hop developed. It’s popularity continued on into the new dance and the Charleston pattern is one of the cornerstones of Lindy Hop. Swing Party 7:30pm -11:00pm Get up onto the dance floor with your newly learnt moves. Join the Lindy Hoppers of Singapore as they Swing out and inspire you to experiment with everything you know and more. Guest instructors Soochan and Hyunjung will also be performing their world famous, award winning routines. Sun 22 May 2016 2pm to 530pm Swing out and swing on This class will continue to develop your skills as lead/follow and to give more insights into the simple yet elusive perfect swing out. Freestyle, Swing Style! One of the most exciting aspects of Lindy Hop is how to freestyle with your partner and create a musical dance right there and then. This class will give some tips and tricks on how to use even simple moves to make up a fun and creative dance. 30s’ Charleston Variations More Charleston variations to add to your repertoire.The 30s “tandem” Charleston is one of the unique steps that makes Lindy Hop unlike any other dance!
