From her sixth birthday she did gymnastics for over 10 years. During those years she also danced and acted in show groups: mainly streetdance and made several dance choreographs for her school. Over the years she took lessens and improvised a lot with several dances as: salsa, modern dance/ Contemporary, ballroom dance and the flamenco. In 2006 she discovered the ‘Brazilian Zouk dance’! Since than she won’t stop dancing, and it became her passion! She has an unique style of moving every part of her body on a very sensual and feminal way on the music!. Till now she loves to create en make choreographs on the Zouk music! According to her is dancing ‘the Brazilan Zouk’ a combination of creating with a lots of feeling and passion on/with the music at the same time! The music and the dance The word Zouk is Creole for Party. Zouk music has it’s origin ± 100 years ago in the French Caribbean. Like many latin dances zouk dance started as a slave dance, similar as Salsa (Cuban partner dance), Rumba (Cuban fertility dance), Tango (Argentine partner dance), Bachata (Dominican partner dance), Samba de Gafeira and Forro (both Brazilian partner dances). Zouk dance as it is danced in the French Caribbean is similar to Merengue, a relaxed partner dance with a 2-step rhythm on a 4-count beat, replacing weight from right-left and vice versa). When in the early nineties the popularity of Lambada declined, Brazilian dance teachers mixed Lambada dance patterns with more or less patterns of Samba de Gafeira, Salsa, Tango and Forro, and slowed down the high BPM of Lambada to a slower count, making it easier to learn and easier to include new steps, moves, patterns and combinations. You can still recognise the sensuality of Lambada and the basic steps of Samba de Gafeira in (Brazilian) Zouk. In Porto Seguro dancers stayed closer to the original Lambada, and so LambaZouk came to live, a substyle within the family of Brazilian Zouk, the BPM is higher and there are more “Lambada-moves” in Lambazouk: basic-stepping to the side, the accent on the 3 and 6 (first “quick”), there are mostly circular moves, and there is a lot of actively waving the hair on the 4 and 8. In Rio de Janeiro, Zouk was mixed with Forro (Soltinho Circular), Salsa (Cross-Body-Lead into Boomerang-bonus), Samba de Gafeira (basic steps) and Tango (ocho into lateral). In this way Zouk became part of the Brazilian Ballroom Family: Bolero, Forro, Samba de Gafeira, Zouk. And so Rio-style Zouk (or Zouk-Love) came to live, the BPM is lower, the accent is on the 1 and 5 (the “slow”). There are still circular moves but the hair-waving is slow-motioned, these moves start on 4 and 8 but are delayed into the 1 and 5 Recently new substyles emerge like Lyrical Zouk, R&B style zouk and Neo-Zouk. New electronic music with zouk-a-like rhythms inspire dancers to incorporate R&B, HipHop, Contemporary and Contact Improvisation, thus creating the worlds most versatile dance style: Brazilian Zouk. Lambada was a typical beach dance. It was danced barefoot in beachwear, bikinis, short skirts, capoeira pants, etc. By evolving into Zouk, it became more of a ballroom dance and has thus gained a pathway to international acceptance in countries one wouldn't normally associate with Brazilian dances. As a result, Zouk has become very popular in, for example, Australia, Russia, Czech Republic, Netherlands and even in exotic places like Dubai and Oman. The event last year, IZFM 2012, triggered 1000s of new dancers and brought Zouk to many new evolving zouk scenes in the Far-East, Scandinavia, USA and Canada. In Africa and Cabo Verde Zouk took a completely different turn. The same rhythm, but a totally different dance evolved, Kizomba. In the late nineties Brazilian Zouk spread to Europe and contemporary dance elements were added. It also became popular to remix other styles of music with the Zouk beat. Nowadays Zouk is danced on a great variety music styles, including Hip Hop, R&B, Lounge, Kizomba and even Neo-Classical. Part of the popularity of modern Zouk lies in the freedom that dancers have to add their own interpretations to the movements. It is much less regulated than, for example, Tango or Salsa. This resulted in the development of several distinct Zouk styles, which can be primarily differentiated by their music, but also by the moves, ways of leading and general dynamic. In general You can say Zouk is more smooth, versatile, offers more space for expression and contains much more “flow” than any other partner-dance.
