About this Event

I’m offering ‘She Dances’ because, for a while, I’ve been feeling drawn to dance in a women’s only space. I’ve had a sense that there is part of me that is holding back, that might feel more at ease, more free, more playful, more able to be fully myself in a women’s space. I also had a sense that I might not be the only one! I felt called to offer this possibility to myself and others, as a regular thing. What to expect I’ll bring some great music and hold the space with as much sensitivity and love as I can muster. Guidance will be relatively minimal but will usher you towards tuning in and trusting how your body wants to move, sometimes a suggestion (always optional, you do your dance!) or something else gentle that intuitively bubbles up. I’ll weave together a mixture of genres but there will always be a good few tracks of uplifting melodic introspective techno/ tech-house or along those lines. The music will start gently, get more energetic and then we’ll simmer down and return to softer music. You won’t be learning new moves from me, but as you move and trust your body, you might find yourself naturally exploring some new ways of moving - sometimes we surprise ourselves! And just as a by-product of your presence and movement, you might find yourself learning too, sometimes we learn about ourselves through our dance, from time to time a little ‘aha’ might bubble up. What is expected of you Just to show up (sober) and dance/stretch/move however you feel drawn to, whether that’s energetically, slowly, upright, sitting or lying down. Whatever feels right in the moment. There’s nothing to get wrong or right. You don’t have to be feeling energetic. You don’t have to be in a good mood. Just come along and move in company and see what happens. As a general rule please dance on your own rather than inviting others to dance with you (unless they’re someone you know well and they clearly want to dance too.) Let’s let the music be the only sound and keep our chatting for before or after class. Who is welcome? Women of any shape and size are welcome to come and move freely together. How am I defining ‘women’? I am defining ‘women’ in a broad sense of anyone who currently identifies as a woman and also inclusive of anyone who is non-binary but has experience of living in a female body (in this lifetime ;) ). Please reach out to me via email if you have questions regarding this. Cost First session is just £5 (September 2nd only). After that classes will be £10/ £8 (low income). Cash is simplest for me but bank transfer also possible! About me Dance has always been a part of my life. From contemporary classes in my tweens (cue flashback of shows sporting flares, lime-green velour, slicked-back ‘sporty spice’ hair and bright lipstick) to years of devotion to the Leeds and Nottingham club scenes. In my early twenties, I devoted myself to yoga and meditation, flitting between home and India, and as I shed the skin of proud advocate of intoxication culture, dance also dropped away. Arriving on the sober dance scene a few years later felt like a homecoming for me. Once dancing in this way became a regular part of my life, I started to experience a feeling that my body had ways it wanted to move that had nothing to do with my conscious mind. My dancing would surprise me, and it has become for me a process of trusting and allowing my body’s own expression. Often, I find dance to be therapeutic; a long-held sadness surfaces or a profound sense of the joy of being alive. Sometimes a quietening of thoughts and heightened intuition, where deeper understandings of myself and life might meander their way to the surface of my awareness. I feel blessed to have this opportunity to hold space for us to dance!
